The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has recently launched an investigation into approximately 877,000 V8 engines from General Motors. Several owners of pickup trucks and SUVs equipped with the 6.2-liter gasoline V8 have reported premature connecting rod bearing wear, leading to catastrophic engine failure without warning.

The affected vehicles include 2019 to 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, as well as Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade models equipped with the 6.2-liter L87 V8. So far, the NHTSA is relying on 39 official complaints. A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a serious collision or other damage. If the investigation confirms these failures, GM could be forced to recall a large number of its most popular trucks.

Meanwhile, last November, the NHTSA launched another investigation into certain Honda models following 173 complaints regarding bearing failures in V6 engines of vehicles produced between 2016 and 2020. This investigation covers approximately 1.4 million engines.
