The Right to Repair continues to generate significant debates. Recently, the Alliance of Automotive Innovation, a coalition of several automobile manufacturers, once again attempted to oppose this measure, which is strongly advocated by independent mechanics. However, Judge Denise Casper, of Boston, rejected their opposition, thereby recognizing the rights of independent repair shops.
The Alliance begun its efforts in 2021 to block this initiative. For years, the Right to Repair has required manufacturers to allow independent repair shops access to mechanical and electronic repair data for vehicles. Although this right had been recognized, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) had advised manufacturers not to comply, citing potential cybersecurity risks.
This time, according to reliable sources, the decision appears to be final, marking a victory for independent mechanics and consumers.
